Embracing Millennials

American Airlines Is Officially My Favorite Airline.

I recently flew on American Airlines and they have done something awesome.  Because I fly so much for work, AA lets me use their Admirals lounge when I travel.  While free coffee from an expensive latte machine, a serviceable snack are fine, softer chairs, and a more quiet environment are nice little perks, my trip on my last flight had an amazing new amenity that literally stopped me in my tracks: made-to-order avocado toast.

I know what you’re thinking – who cares?  Well, I’m a millennial (those born between 1980 and 1996) and we LOVE avocado toast.  TIME reports we spend $900,000 a month on it!  The toast was delicious, but that wasn’t what had me so excited.  What makes this so amazing is that it means millennials finally are getting some real power in business.

This shouldn’t be a surprise as millennials currently make up 40% of the US workforce.  The problem is that we have amassed quite the stereotype with Baby Boomers and Gen X’ers blaming us for killing hundreds of industries from golf to beer to diamonds to cars to hotels.  And God knows we’re not defensible. From eating tide pods to snorting condoms, millennials have done some really stupid things. But millennials do represent the greatest generational departure in thinking and we will continue to disrupt the status quo.

Businesses have to decide if they will embrace millennials by adapting their leadership style or slowly die as their employees leave for competitors.  American Airlines gets it – do you? Get started with the course “Managing Millennials” today if you’re ready to thrive.
