Do you want better crew leaders? Start here.

By Phil Harwood

The crew leader position is one of the most important positions in our industry, if not the most important position. It’s at the crew level where the rubber meets the road.

A great crew leader can make or break a job. While they may not be able to completely save a job that was under bid, at least they will minimize the damage. However, a poor crew leader may ruin a job that was perfectly bid.

For this reason, GrowTheBench has developed a training program specifically to help crew leaders become better. And not just better, but great!

How different would your company be if all of your crew leaders were great? How many more labor hours would be saved ? How many more mistakes would be avoided? How would this affect your profit margin?

Here’s the deal: many crew leaders would like to be better, but they don’t know how to do so. They don’t know what to focus on. They don’t know where the bar is. No one has shown them. They haven’t received training. That’s where we come in.

Our training program breaks out the crew leader position into five distinct roles. Each of these roles breaks out into 10 elements. That’s a total of 50 elements in all. Each element represents an opportunity for the crew leader to improve in that area.

This training program includes a complete scoring guide that gives you a numerical rating for each element, each role, and overall. This gives you and your crew leader the ability to measure progress toward the objective: to become a great crew leader.

For this training program to be effective, there needs to be a champion at your company to lead the process: to decide who is going to participate in this training program, the timing of it, and, most importantly, how to interact with crew leaders, to develop action plans for improvement.

My recommendation is to have crew leaders and their managers go through this training once a year at a minimum. Some companies have implemented a quarterly assessment, using the great leader scoring guide as the foundation. Start small and build on what you’ve started.

Here’s the bottom line. A powerful tool has already been created for you to use your business to create great leaders. All you have to do is take the tool and implement it.

If you’re interested in considering this program, send me an email and I’ll hook you up with a complimentary trial of GrowTheBench.com, where you can preview the entire course for yourself. My email is Phil@GrowTheBench.com.

If you’re interested in an in-person workshop at your company, just send me an email to get the conversation started.

Now go forth.
